FORMER Masters star Lee James claimed the Clifford Burden Trophy as he represented Dorset at South West Week.

Broadstone GC's James, who played at Augusta National GC in 1995 after winning the Amateur Championship the previous year, recently returned to the amateur ranks.

And the 7.5 points he bagged for his county at Weston-super-Mare GC in Somerset made him the highest contributor of any player on any team.

Dorset could have finished as high as second in the SWCGA Inter-County Team Match Play Championship but were denied by a 7.25-6.75 defeat to Devon.

Tom Leech's side had previously beaten Wiltshire 7.5-6.5, lost to Cornwall 8.5-5.5, lost to Somerset 8.75-5.25 and beaten Gloucestershire 7.25-6.75.

That put Dorset fifth in the standings while hosts Somerset took overall victory having earned four wins from their five matches.

In the SWCGA Amateur Championship, Poole-born James was the highest Dorset finisher, carding 71 and 67 to finish 11th on two under par.

Will Poole of Mendip Spring GC in Bristol took the honours in that competition, recording successive rounds of 65 to triumph by a shot from Sam Sloman of Taunton & Pickeridge GC.

The SWCGA EG qualifier saw Dorset finish sixth, with James again the standout team member having shot two under across two rounds.
