GARY Emerson today made an impressive start to the PGA Seniors Championship at Stoke by Nayland.

The Remedy Oak pro, 50, carded a one-under-par round of 70 in his first 18 in Essex, placing him tied-14th at the end of play.

Teeing off at the 10th, Emerson experienced a solid if unspectacular opening nine, dropping a shot at the 11th before sinking a birdie three on 17.

Matters started to pick up after the turn, but not after an early wobble.

Emerson carded a bogey four at the first but back-to-back birdies of two and three respectively got him back on track.

A bogey and a birdie on five and six and three further pars ensured Emerson finished one-under.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Ferndown’s Kevin Spurgeon who could only manage five-over in his first European Senior Tour event of the year.

Emerson tees off at 8.20pm tomorrow morning while Spurgeon is off at midday.

Des Smyth led the field overnight on five-under.
