Poole armband for Browne

VETERAN defender Simon Browne has been named as Poole Town's captain for the new season.

The Wessex League campaign gets under way on Saturday and Tom Killick's Dolphins have been widely tipped as one of the favourites for the Premier Division crown.

And they will be led into battle by former Salisbury City full-back Browne, who replaces Ian Richardson as skipper.

Killick, meanwhile, will have to do without Alan Jordan and Stuart Gates after both left the Tatnam club.

Jordan has been posted to work in Catterick, while forward Gates has been offered a scholarship in Bristol.

Star winger Trefor Smith will also be unavailable for some matches after obtaining a work placement in London.

Speaking about Smith, Killick said: "His availability will be restricted and that's the biggest blow. He's a huge talent and, ability-wise, one of the best players I've ever worked with or seen at non-league level.

"To lose him is a bitter blow but I'm hoping he'll still be able to play quite a few games."

Killick's squad still has a new-look to it, despite the losses of Jordan and Gates, with about seven summer recruits likely to be in the running for a starting spot this weekend.

  • For the first time in a decade, the club have new main sponsors. Holton Homes were Poole's primary sponsors for nine successive years but have been replaced by Crow Developments UK Ltd.

    PHIL'S NEW RECRUITS

PHIL Simkin has completed his summer signing spree after taking the number of new recruits into double figures.

The Hamworthy United boss looks to have a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Wessex Premier Division this season after bringing some fine talents to the County Ground.

Poole Town defender Karl Yelland signed for Hammers on Saturday, while Simkin has also moved for Tim Constable, who was at Bournemouth Poppies last term, and Dorchester Town prospect Chris Clarke.

Hamworthy completed their pre-season programme with a 4-1 victory over Verwood Town at the weekend. Warren Byerley (2), Max Crow and Nathan Walker netted for the hosts, while Pete King struck for Adie Arnold's side.

Verwood, meanwhile, completed their pre-season games with a 3-0 win over Blandford at Potterne Park last night.
