Phillips targets Poole starting berth
 |
| VETERAN: Leigh Phillips |
NO-NONSENSE forward Leigh Phillips is fully focused on forcing his way into the Poole Town starting line-up after revealing he never considered moving into management with Bournemouth Poppies.
Phillips, who was right-hand man to James Wood at Victoria Park last season, opted to leave the club when Wood resigned three weeks ago.
And taking the reigns from Wood wasn't something that crossed the veteran target man's mind.
"I ruled myself out straight away," Phillips told the Daily Echo.
"Having seen the time and effort James put in, with my job and family life, there's not enough time in the day as it is."
Poppies' loss is Poole's gain, as Dolphins manager Tom Killick wasted little time in luring his former Wimborne Town team-mate to Tatnam.
But competition for places is fierce in the Poole squad, particularly for an attacker, so Phillips knows he will have his work cut out if he is to nail down a regular starting spot.
He said: "I haven't got long left - I'm 35 this year - so hopefully I can play my fair share of games.
"It's going to be tough. We had a hell of a squad in the friendly against AFC Bournemouth and I think Neil Perrett (Echo football reporter) picked up that we had more players than Bournemouth!
"I think we've got about seven forwards and they're all decent players. Hopefully I can force my way in more often than not."
Phillips did not want to make any rash predictions on Poole's Wessex Premier Division prospects, but he believes Killick's new-look squad will be in the mix.
"Other people in the league will see the players at Tom's disposal and think they fancy us to do something," he said.
"But I'd never say we'll win this or that.
"We've got to be confident and if we work hard we'll be there or thereabouts."
