Cup consolation for Magpies
TOP MAN: Mark Jones is presented with his award
TOP MAN: Mark Jones is presented with his award

CHRISTER Warren guided Wimborne Town to Wessex League Cup glory before quickly targeting greater success next season.

Scott Joyce's 58th-minute goal settled the Hurn Bridge showdown against a spirited Moneyfields side.

The match failed to live up to expectations as the two teams, both known for their desire to play attractive football, served up a largely disappointing spectacle for the 520-strong crowd.

But the one moment of quality in the match, a brilliant inswinging Warren free-kick, supplied the ammunition for Magpies' top scorer Joyce to scramble home the only goal of the afternoon to seal the trophy.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, player-boss Warren, in his first season as a manager, admitted the clash wasn't of the highest calibre.

He said: "It was an awful game but sometimes you've got to win ugly. I'm really pleased with the effort the players have put in this year, they've done themselves proud."

Warren acknowledged that promotion would have been a far greater success, and that seems to be the club's main aim for next season.

"Everyone at the club is dying for success and I know it's a consolation winning the league cup and not going up, but there's something there for everyone," admitted the former Cherries midfielder.

"Hopefully we can kick on for next year and go on to bigger and better things.

"We've highlighted where we need to improve and we're trying to get those people in to make us stronger.

"We'll try to keep this squad but just add a few more in key areas. I'm a year more experienced so hopefully we can use that to our advantage and get out of this league."

While Wimborne failed to impress on Saturday going forward, their defence was rock solid, despite the absence of influential skipper and central defender Paul Roast.

Mark Jones was named the official man-of-the-match, with fellow centre-half Sam Percival also performing well.

Moneyfields enjoyed more than their fair share of possession but, thanks to the efforts of the Magpies back four, goalkeeper Nick Hutchings was only called into serious action once, saving bravely at the feet of Abdoulie N'Doye in the 71st minute.

Warren summed up the proceedings accurately by adding: "We didn't cause them any problems and they didn't cause us any."

Suspended Magpies captain Roast was on hand to lift the trophy along with stand-in skipper Scott Arnold.

Wimborne: Hutchings, Arnold, Bailey-Pearce, Warren (Vavrecka, 70), Percival, Jones, James, Woods, Joyce, Stokoe (Whitcher, 80), McCormick. Unused subs: Haysom, Moore, Walker-Harris.
