Riley run out in Bash defeat
LOOKING TO TUESDAY: Steve Riley
LOOKING TO TUESDAY: Steve Riley

A MUCH-changed Bashley side, with one eye firmly fixed on Tuesday's play-off semi-final, lost at Bedford on Saturday.

Boss Steve Riley showed his desire to rest his key men by fielding a team consisting mainly of fringe players, with perhaps only Paul Gazzard, Danny Smith, Justin Keeler and Ryan Moss likely to start on Tuesday night.

"I enjoyed it," said Riley, who gave himself a full 90-minute run-out.

"Both teams played the game in a good spirit and the result wasn't important in all honesty. With the game on Tuesday, we just wanted to get no injuries and enjoy the game.

"I was pleased with the performances of some of the young lads and we weren't worried about the defeat.

"It would've been nice to finish on a high but the result wasn't going to change the positions of either team."

Bashley face a trip to Team Bath on Tuesday after the Students finished second in the Southern League Premier Division. And Riley was pleased to avoid an arduous journey to King's Lynn, who booked their automatic promotion slot by winning at Merthyr Tydfil to pip Bath to the title.

He said: "It's probably the best one for us from the travelling aspect. King's Lynn have also got a fan base of about 2,000, so they'd have expected to get about 3,000 if we were playing them in the play-offs.

"The advantage would've been with them."

Bash will be hoping for a repeat of the league meeting between the two sides at the start of this month, when Riley's men triumphed against Bath in a seven-goal thriller.

"I think we're pleased with Team Bath," said the Bash boss. "The spoils have been shared between us this season, so it will be difficult.

"But from an organisational and logistical point of view, I think we've got the best out of Saturday's results."

Bash will be hoping for a big away support and there is a supporter's coach leaving for Twerton Park at 3.30pm from the Recreation Ground, Bashley Road.

To reserve a place, contact the club's commercial manager Cindy Walker by tomorrow morning on 01425 620280.

Bashley: Harper, Gazzard, Archbold (Ferrett, 70), Hayter, Burch, Sainsbury, Smith (Davis, h-t), Riley, Keeler, Moss, Brock.

Massive massive game for us, if anyone fancies cheering on a 'real' team against a platic one funded by the government then please please get up the road to Bath and help Bash on tuesday night.
