Fab fifth for Wood's Poppies
PRIDE: James Wood
PRIDE: James Wood

POPPIES boss James Wood expressed his pride after his side finished the season in fifth position.

The Victoria Park outfit's Wessex Premier Division title challenge fizzled out in the final month of the campaign, with defeat at Fareham on Saturday completing a disappointing conclusion.

But, on the whole, Wood has been delighted with the efforts of his players, and he believes that next season could be even better.

He said: "The response I've got from the players is excellent and the signs are that everyone will re-sign and things are looking good. I said after the game that it's been a privilege to work with them this year. I've been proud and it's been a fantastic season for us to be challenging with the top four."

Despite dominating for long periods at the weekend, Poppies were twice hit on the counter attack by hosts Fareham.

"It was a disappointing result but probably the best we'd played for about five weeks," explained Wood. "I couldn't have asked for any more.

"We dominated the game, the performance levels were superb and the effort and quality was there.

"The result was obviously a bad one but the performance was everything I'd asked of them."

Poppies: Kearn, Beckett, Cherrett, Dibba, M Toy, Constable, Dancer (White), Sanderson, Crow, Phillips, Jeffes (McCabe). Unused subs: Morrell, Wood.
