Warren tells team: ‘Fight for cup spot’
CUP final places and local bragging rights are on the line for Wimborne Town tomorrow when they visit lowly Romsey Town (3pm).
Player-boss Christer Warren has urged his players to fight for their spot in his starting line-up ahead of next week's Wessex League Cup final.
Tomorrow's match also presents a perfect opportunity for the Cuthbury outfit to finish their Premier Division campaign on a high by beating rivals Poole Town and Bournemouth Poppies to third position.
Warren's men should fancy their chances at Romsey, given the fact that tomorrow's hosts have won just two league matches in 2008 - against bottom two Downton and Ringwood.
"They started well and took everyone by surprise but they have tailed off," Warren told the Daily Echo.
"I just want my lads to go out and say give me a starting place in the cup final'."
Former Cherries midfielder Warren insists he is far from decided on his first-choice XI for next week's cup showdown against Moneyfields.
He said: "People can force their way in.
"Everyone knows it's a strange game and one minute you can be high in confidence, and the next you're not.
"I want to see people playing for places and giving a positive response for the cup final."
Warren revealed that finishing third in the final standings will offer scant consolation after his team had long looked like mounting a serious championship challenge.
"Up until the final month we were in with a shout of winning and then fell at the final hurdle," he said.
"We've made an improvement on last year but I wanted to win it, I won't lie.
"I'm disappointed we haven't done it but I'll learn from my mistakes and it will make me a better manager for next year."
Despite wanting to see two positive performances to end the season, Warren hinted that his mind may already be made up when it comes to making changes to his squad in the summer.
He said: "It's not about these two games.
"I've got to put it right because we were doing well and fell short."
Central defender and teamcaptain Paul Roast will miss Magpies' final two matches as he is serving a four-match ban, which will run into the start of next season.
