Bash sail into play-offs
ACHIEVEMENT: Steve Riley
ACHIEVEMENT: Steve Riley

STEVE Riley was in jubilant mood after Bashley shrugged off the absence of two star players to finally book their place in the Southern League Premier Division play-offs.

Despite being without central defender Pete Castle and goal-machine Richard Gillespie, Bash defeated Mangotsfield 1-0 at the Recreation Ground to keep alive their dream of completing successive promotions.

Boss Riley was understandably delighted after half-time substitute Justin Keeler came off the bench to net the winner in the 65th minute.

With Gloucester City failing to win, Bash are guaranteed a fifth-place finish and are set for a trip to either King's Lynn or Team Bath in the play-off semi-finals.

"It's great and brilliant knowing that we can go to Bedford next week with the pressure off a bit. It's fantastic on and off the park," Riley told the Daily Echo.

"Everyone worked hard and we've achieved more than anyone thought we would this season.

"I think a top-10 finish would have been brilliant but we've done better than people expected.

"It's credit to everyone on and off the pitch that we've done so well. We worked hard, had a bit of a blip, but had already got into a good position."

Despite losing 5-0 at King's Lynn in midweek, Riley believes his side have a chance in the play-offs and says "anything can happen on the day".

He also thinks that his team can compete, even if Gillespie is unavailable for the remainder of the season.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed on Richard Gillespie," said Riley.

"He'll be getting intensive treatment to try to get back. It's unfortunate but we've got to get on with it like we did on Saturday.

"To lose a player like that is hard to swallow and makes it hard, but it's always hard.

"We're not going to go into the play-offs without Richard Gillespie thinking we haven't got a chance because we have.

"We're capable with the squad we've got of doing something. We've got to make sure we're ready and get as good a squad as we can, then who knows."

Former Cherries forward Dave Town stepped in for Gillespie to partner Ryan Moss in attack against Mangotsfield.

"Dave Town would rather play up front but he's been playing in behind the front two previously," said Riley.

"But he got some through balls and in good space and caused all sorts of problems on Saturday."

Bashley: Elm, Gazzard, Ferrett, Archbold, Middleton, Smith, Knowles, Davis, Moss, Town, Sainsbury (Keeler, h-t). Unused subs: Harper, Burch, Brock, Riley.

Fantastic, many congratulations to the Riles the backroom staff and all the boys for a fab season, Elmo player of the year spot on, special metion to Ryan Moss also outstanding since the end of last year,A word for the fans you (we) have been outstanding, Dave Grant my Fan of the year (thats just for his dancing),Onward and upwards to the playoff semi, hopefully against Team Bath, with a potential final against Halesowen or Chippenham, then we march stronger than ever into the Bluesqure League's and take on some of non-league's big guns, fab effort for a village club.Whatever happens in the play offs though its been a terrific effort all round and we all look forward to next season.Their's a real buzz about the place and we really are the areas up and comming club, Special mention to Steve Davies for being such a staunch defender of the cause here at Bash he stands up against any small mindedness that can creep in, you will see his posts on websites all over non-league football shouting for Bash's cause, Well done Steve , keep it up pal, your almost forgiven for being a liverpool fan in ur spare time!

Fantastic day wasn't it! Nerves....god it was tense for a while wasn't it and sheer jubilation after the goal that saw grown men jumping up and down hugging each other.

This season consolidation would have been enough for most of us and for a while it unbelievable it seemed as if we had every chance of winning the thing after a shaky start to life in the Prem until some horrendous luck with injuries to a small squad took it's effect.

Everyone at the club has been superb from inside the boardroom to the average joe on the terraces have had a role to play this season and everyone of them pulled it off with aplomb. Bash is a very special club that is only destined to go one way and that is into the Conference, what other club's fans in the country would have formed a Cucumber Club.

The players, manager and backroom staff have worked wonders this year - when can we stop calling Riles a rookie? The fans...omg the fans have been immense at times and anyone who witnessed the atmosphere at both Team Bath games will never forget it, yesterday despite the rain driving into their faces the Cucumber Club behind the goals never let up the barrage of noise and chants and deserve to see their team prosper in the play-offs.

To Riles, the squad, the exec committee, and the QQ's thank you, thank you so much for getting us into the play-offs and making this truly a season to remember.

NOW LETS WIN THE PLAY-OFFS
