Magpies crush Downton
'FARCE': Christer Warren
'FARCE': Christer Warren

THE Wessex League's largest crowd of the weekend watched a 10-goal feast at Cuthbury as Wimborne Town ran riot against whipping boys Downton.

The Premier Division clash always looked a massive mismatch on paper, with Magpies having scored 110 goals, compared to the visitors' woeful 174 against.

And there were few surprises once proceedings got under way as the hosts racked up an 8-0 lead inside the opening 39 minutes. To Downton's credit, they managed to shut up shop to better effect after the break and only conceded a further two goals.

James Stokoe netted an 11-minute hat-trick before the interval, with Scott Joyce, Tommy McCormick and Sam Percival getting two apiece, and Danny Woods also got on the scoresheet.

Despite the resounding result, player-boss Christer Warren admitted that such a non-contest is difficult to enjoy.

He said: "You don't really enjoy games like that because it's hard to keep going when you bang in so many goals in a short space of time.

"It's hard because you've got so much time on the ball and the game becomes a bit of a farce.

"But it was nice to get some goals under our belts and that will give the scorers some confidence going into the next game."

Warren thought Downton were a poor side, as one would expect of a team with such a terrible record.

"They didn't even play with one up front in the second half," he told the Daily Echo.

"They just put everyone behind the ball to make it difficult, which they did. We only got two goals in the second half, so credit to them for that.

"I thought they would've put up more of a fight. It was something ridiculous like 4-0 in 10 minutes and they didn't really give us a game at all."

The victory means Wimborne are in pole position to claim third spot in the Premier Division, with one game remaining.

"With Poole Town and Bournemouth Poppies both drawing, it was a good weekend for us," said Warren.

"The only disappointment was VT winning. Now we've got two matches left (including the Wessex League Cup final) and I don't want the lads to see the season out. I want them to keep going.

"They're all playing for places next season. Everyone knows people will be coming into the club and I just want the players that are here at the moment to say keep me next year because I can do this or that'. They need to put in good performances that stick in my mind."

Wimborne Town: Hutchings, Phillipson-Masters (Jones, 15), Percival, Roast, Arnold, James, Woods (Vavrecka, h-t), McCormick, Bailey-Pearce, Joyce, Stokoe (Whitcher, 60).
