VT down Hammers
PLEASED: Phil Simkin
PLEASED: Phil Simkin

PHIL Simkin claimed a "moral victory" after his depleted Hamworthy United team lost at high-flying VT FC.

Goals either side of the interval from Tyrone Bowers and Warren Hunt secured the win for VT, and runners-up spot in the Wessex Premier Division.

But Hammers boss Simkin felt his side competed well against their more illustrious opponents, despite being without skipper Nathan Walker, Steve Gilbert, Carl Mutch and set-piece specialist Micky Hubbard.

"They're a good side with excellent players but we gave a really good account of ourselves," he told the Daily Echo.

"We were missing four of our experienced players but it gave the likes of Greg Horlock a chance to shine. He's been one of the big successes this season, together with Matt Grimason."

The pair, who are products of the Hammers youth set-up, have already committed themselves to the club for next season.

Hamworthy United: Peters, Kenway, Grimason, Horlock, Dovell, Glavin (Middleton, h-t), Legg, Dean, Jackson, Byerley, Pinder (Khider, 70). Unused subs: Byrne, Roushbiari.
