Rival bosses settle for a derby draw

RIVAL managers Simon Browne and Graham Kemp both seemed content with a point after old foes Hamworthy United and Christchurch battled out a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The Wessex Premier clubs – both with top-six aspirations, although that aim will have to wait until next season for Hammers – had their chances to claim victory in the County Ground clash.

Max Crow fired the hosts into an early lead before Mark Smith levelled on the hour.

Hammers player-boss Browne, who has led his team from the relegation places into mid-table security, said: “They probably felt they could’ve won it and we had two chances late on. Both sides were going for it. Speaking to people afterwards, they said it was a reasonable game to watch.”

Priory boss Graham Kemp added: “The last quarter-of-an-hour saw both teams have chances, but both missed gilt-edged opportunities to win the game.”

The result leaves Christchurch is seventh place with games in hand, while Hammers, much improved since Browne’s appointment, are up to 13th.

Hamworthy United: Frampton, Llewelyn, Horlock, Antrobus, R Jackson, Merritt, Barron, Crow, Dancer (Toghill, 55), Swann (Khider, 85), Burbidge. Unused subs: M Jackson, Browne.

Christchurch: Kearn, Costello, Taylor, Crutchley (Linpow, h-t), Dand, Bernard, Smith, Fairbrother, Osborne, Jeffes, Rideout (Harris, 60). Unused subs: Green, Lucas, Legg.

• Ringwood Town boss Wayne Lockey insisted his side would keep their feet firmly on the ground after they continued to make a last-ditch dash towards the promotion shake-up.

The Wessex One outfit extended their fine run to nine wins in 10 games by beating Warminster Town 2-1.

Goals from Carl Fleet and Dan Taylor helped Lockey’s men move up to seventh spot, just five points adrift of the top three.

But level-headed Lockey said: “We want to go up but it doesn’t drive us at the moment.”

Their latest success came despite finishing with 10 men due to Mark Burrett becoming Ringwood’s third injured player, after Lockey had already used his substitutions.

Ringwood Town: T Taylor, Burrett, Morrell (Howes, 20), Hetherington, T Yeats, Pierson, Ormond, Clarke (Leadbetter, 30), Burnett (D Taylor, 70), Fleet, Sexton.

• Wimborne Town saw their game at Alresford Town postponed, with Poppies’ clash at Hayling United also called off.

In Division One, Verwood Town’s home meeting with AFC Aldermaston failed to get the nod.
