COACH Steve Cuss believes past experience could prove key as Poole Town look to retain the Wessex League championship.
The battle for the Premier Division silverware looks set to be a much tighter affair this term, with Wimborne Town setting a furious pace at the summit.
But Tom Killick’s reigning champions are refusing to buckle under the pressure and they clung on to their favourites’ tag with a hard-fought win over Brockenhurst on Saturday.
And although Dolphins look likely to be pushed much closer this season – having won at a canter last time round – Cuss thinks their previous success could prove advantageous.
He told the Echo: “It definitely helps. The players know they have got to play a lot of games and that it is important to look after themselves and prepare for the games.
“It is a massive help that they have been there and done it before. We hope it will stand us in good stead.”
Poole ensured they did not lose ground on their arch rivals when goals from Michael Walker, Russell Cook and Carl Preston saw off spirited Brock.
And Cuss thought the performance of defender Walker, signed from Magpies earlier in the season, was a major plus.
He added: “He’s a good player. He plays at centre-half and that’s his job, but he’s a big threat at set-pieces. We are delighted with Michael and he has settled in well.”
Poole: Jones, Whitley, Lloyd, Walker, Dovell, Gill, Richardson, Hubbard (Sturgess, 60), Preston (Gates,70), Cook, Brown (S Smith, 70). Unused subs: Poore, T Smith.
