Dolphins promotion bid in serious doubt

Poole Town’s Southern League promotion bid has been thrown into doubt once again after vice-chairman Chris Reeves ruled out the possibility of a ground share.

Dolphins, who remained in pole position to win the Wessex League by beating Brading Town 2-0 on Saturday, have been trying to find somewhere suitable to host step four football next season.

Their Tatnam home failed ground-grading regulations last season, ruining their hopes of climbing back up the non-league ladder.

And the Dorset club face that prospect again this term unless they can discover a way of overcoming the obstacle.

Reeves told the Echo: “We’re not going to be able to achieve a ground share. The reasons why things haven’t happened with various clubs have been understandable. We haven’t got anywhere.

“Every conceivable avenue was thoroughly explored and it was just not practical this season.”

Fawcett’s Field emerged as a major contender after Poole were encouraged by the Football Association to pursue a ground share agreement, but New Milton Town Council blocked that move. Other possible venues in the area included Wimborne Town’s Cuthbury, Dean Court, Weymouth and Dorchester Town.

However, Poole were forced back to the drawing board in the wake of the Fawcett’s Field setback and, with a ground share now off the agenda, they face a race the beat the FA’s ground-grading deadline of March 31.

Reeves added: “We’re actively exploring whether or not we can upgrade Tatnam satisfactorily for the FA.

“We’re actively trying to be creative again to see whether we can do anything at Tatnam.”

Dolphins boss Tom Killick, who watched his defending champions maintain their position as title favourites by defeating Brading, insisted that the club’s bid to secure a new permanent home was more important than achieving promotion this term.

Having seen their controversial plans for a stadium at Branksome Rec declined, Poole are now exploring Plan B at Canford Arena.

Killick said: “The big thing for the club is to secure the new ground.”

Meanwhile, former Cherries prospect Carl Preston was the star of the show in the hard-fought win over Brading.

After Poole had struggled to break down the resolute visitors, left-sided talent Preston set up Stuart Brown for Dolphins’ opener before doubling the advantage himself late on.

Killick added: “In the past few games, Carl has started to get back to the sort of level we knew he was capable of.”

Poole Town: Jones, Whitley, Lloyd (Brown, 60), Walker, Dovell, Preston, Richardson, Skelton, Gill, Smith, Cook (Gates, h-t). Unused subs: Hubbard, Sturgess, Ackerman.

POOLE STADIUM in the HEART of POOLE was built for POOLE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB.

POOLE COUNCIL kicked the club out of POOLE STADIUM and gave a long lease to Stadia UK.

POOLE COUNCILLORS should hang their heads in shame. For two seasons now POOLE TOWN FOOTBALL could have gone up a league but they have not got a stadium suitable because of POOLE COUNCIL!!!

Have we ever heard a word from the councillors over this issue? Of course not its not time for the local elections yet!!

The only councillor who has put their head above the parapet is Cllr P EADES who helped block the move to Branksome REC. When and if he stands for parliament I hope the people of Poole remember.

I agree 100%. I used to watch Poole in the 1990s when they were one division below the Conference with average gates of 700 (1500-2000 for derbies with Bashley and Weymouth). They were treated terribly by a conman chairman and the council causing them to go bankrupt and be kicked out of the stadium. Look at the state of the stadium now! It need to be re-built to accomodate football, greyhound racing and speedway. It just needs a 3-4000 capacity main stand. That has to be cheaper than a whole new stadium and would benefit 3 sports.

Good to see no mention in the article of the people of Poole's tax helping to subsidise the club. Hopefully they can justify their position on merit and get the necessary funding through sponsorship, or if they're good enough, ticket sales. However, it's a tiny minority who are involved and is something which like other sports clubs should be self-funding.

Hope the council stays well out of this as far as money is concerned, but also that the club is successful and can progress through the efforts of their own players and supporters.

Does the stadium roof which is falling apart pass the Health and Safety rules as it is made of asbestos?

Perhaps Stadia UK would like to refurbish it then let Poole Town Football Club back in to help pay for it.
Yes I know the speedway and dog tracks are too wide for a football league size pitch to be accommodated at present. Then bring the dog track out further and then the speedway track and then there will be room for what the stadium was built for:- POOLE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB.

I've said it on this message board before, I can't understand HOW! a new speedway team (Bournemouth Buccaneers) can just one minute form, and then the next minute just waltz into the Stadium and start riding. The council leased the stadium to the current lease holders on condition they did certain things in a certain time frame. IE renovate the stand, but to my knowledge it has never been done. They should either be made to fulfill their responsibility's or have the lease taken away. Then the football team could go back in, big car park, ready made club no problems for the local residents. I think councilor Leverit and co should hang their collective heads in SHAME.

Cllr Leverett should certainly hold his head in shame, he attended all the meeting when Derick Block wanted to refurbish the stadium and he Leverett ran with the fox and the hounds and drove Derick Block away!!
Leverett was the one who led Stadia UK to lease the stadium on a long lease and then kicked Poole Town Football out.
The whole bunches of Councillors deserve to be voted out of office for their destruction of Poole, its amenities and their bowing down to the affluent part time residents. They take no notice of the real Poole People, just look at what they have done to the stadium, the quay, and all the white elephants they have tried to introduce!!
I wonder why????????????????

Maybe, Swanage Town & Herston FC would share their ground at Day's Park for a shilling or two? Of course, the pitch would need drainage work doing during the close season to create a better playing surface.

Evening matches would require all spectators to hold up candles as the floodlights are a bit dim.

This situation is an absolute disgrace to the town of Poole which boasts
some of the most affluent areas in
Europe.google Morecambe fc and
see how another seaside town helps
its football club.
Yes, PTFC have to do their financial share but i cannot fathom how the business community does not put
pressure on council to keep and
improve assets near the town centre.
There is no benefit to anyone in the present situation.

The reason that Poole Council is vegetating over this and all other matters:-
There isn't a local election yet!!!!

They are also too thick skinned to care about the real people of Poole; They just kowtow to the affluent part time inhabitants.
I wonder why!!!
