CRANBORNE manager Melvyn Nicholson is targeting one point from every game until the end of the season, as the Cranes bid to better last term’s total tally of 21.
Nicholson’s side picked up their fourth win of the season when they beat Cobham Sports 1-0 at Merley on Saturday.
Adam Beattie netted after 62 minutes to haul his team out of the bottom two and leave them 15th with 14 points from 21 matches.
The Cranes have suffered a very tough season, which saw them lose their opening nine games. But they have picked up four wins, two draws and six defeats from the last 12, and Nicholson is pleased with the progress his team is making.
He is hopeful Cranborne can finish the campaign with at least 27 points, but admits his main priority is making sure the club enjoys better fortunes next season.
Nicholson said: “We’ve played 21 games now and that leaves us 13 to go. If we pick one point up from every game, it will give us 27 points. That’s what we’re looking at and anything more would be a bonus.
“We’ve got to try and beat the sides in our area of the table. We’re also working on improving our play and just putting in a performance in each game.
“If we get a result, that’s a bonus, but we’re just looking at trying to build for next season. We have to do that now and for me, that has to be through a change in attitude and the way we play.”
At the bottom of the table, Sturminster Newton picked up their first win of the season after triumphing 2-1 at home to Hamworthy United.
Joshua Northam gave Hammers the edge after 17 minutes, but the Cherries equalised a minute before the break and Luke Moore netted the winner nine minutes from time.
Hamworthy Recreation continued their Dorset Premier title charge with a 3-1 win over Sherborne Town at Magna Road.
The visitors took the lead after 12 minutes through Tim Trevett, but the tide turned after the interval and Mike Notley levelled on 53.
Richard Sands gave Rec the lead with four minutes left, before Ashley Ayley made the points safe at the death.
Chickerell United’s challenge faltered as they lost 2-1 at home to Westland Sports, allowing Swanage Town and Herston to draw level with them on 40 points.
Swans triumphed 4-0 over Sturminster Marshall thanks to a Jamie Holland hat-trick and a screamer from Paul Yerby.
Blandford United were unable to stop Portland United going fourth in the DPL table, as the Islanders claimed a 2-1 victory at Park Road.
Mark Ford opened the scoring for the hosts after half-an-hour, but Steve Churchill squared it for Portland five minutes before the break.
Rob Maxted then blasted a stunning 30-yarder past striker Simon Hyde, who was covering for injured goalkeeper Terry Martin, to give the visitors the points.
In the day’s other game, a Matt White goal failed to stop Parley Sports crashing to a 3-1 loss at home to Wincanton Town .
