Scammell delighted with Browne

THERE is one person who is probably even happier than player-boss Simon Browne at Hamworthy United’s recent revival – chairman Bruce Scammell.

The County Ground supremo took a gamble on rookie manager Browne by appointing the former Salisbury City defender in the wake of Phil Simkin’s acrimonious exit in September.

Hammers struggled early in the campaign to discover the sort of form which had made them a force in the Wessex League under Simkin in previous seasons.

A run of bad results eventually ended in Simkin’s demise but, since Browne’s appointment, there have been signs of improvement.

That upturn in fortunes has been perfectly reflected in the team’s past three results – resounding victories over Cowes Sports (4-0), Winchester City (4-2) and Brading Town (4-0).

And while not wanting to put additional pressure on his manager ahead of tomorrow’s home clash against Alton (3pm), Scammell is delighted that the feelgood factor has returned to the club.

He told the Echo: “I’m very impressed with Simon already.

“Everyone’s enjoying being with the club and we’re starting to get a few positive results.

“The club itself has got the enjoyment back – on and off the pitch.

“Our past three results have been fantastic. The feelgood factor is back and everyone is enjoying it on and off the pitch.

“It is only five or six years ago that we were a Dorset Combination side.

“Now we’re that little bit higher and we are playing in the FA competitions. We’ve got a reasonable ground and we’re trying to do things right on and off the pitch.”

Following two postponements in a row, a fourth consecutive win over struggling Alton at the County Ground tomorrow would lift Browne’s men further towards the comfort of mid-table.

Former Poole Town goalkeeper Max Frampton could make his Hammers debut after joining from Brockenhurst. But Ryan Rule, Ollie Cherrett and James Merritt have been ruled out.

Meanwhile, Hammers are searching for a new reserve team manager. For more information contact Peter Gallop 01202 691213 or 07897 959270.
