Balch is over the moon with Sports

COBHAM Sports boss Tim Balch is revelling in his club’s progress after they roared to a tremendous 3-0 win at Wincanton Town on Saturday.

Richard Blake’s header gave Sports the lead after 25 minutes, before a James Wilson brace in the second half sealed the points.

The former Bournemouth Poppies manager took charge of a rudderless and disorderly Cobham ship last November.

After recruiting 25 players and putting in place a strong training routine, Balch is hopeful of putting the club back on the map.

And he was delighted to see his efforts begin to bear fruit following a stunning result in Somerset.

Balch said: “To be fair, we have done pretty well in the last four games, but haven’t really had our just rewards.

“But you make your own luck and it was a good performance against a very strong side on Saturday.

“Sometimes you wonder whether you’re doing the rights things but it all came together.

“We kept our lead in tact through to half time and stopped them scoring early in the second half, which was the springboard to us winning the game.”

He added: “I turned up at Cobham in November and when I arrived, there were only two players left from the previous team.

“They were playing a few reserves and I’ve had to rebuild it from scratch.

“There was no training, no organisation and no manager, so it was a bit of a hard slog.

“But we have a new committee there now and a new chairman and everybody is starting to get interested in the club.”

Elsewhere, basement side Sturminster Marshall recorded a morale-boosting 5-1 rout at home to Hamworthy United.

Lloyd Bird opened the scoring after eight minutes before Ross Humphries bagged a second on 20.

A Darren Orchard free kick pulled one back for Hammers on the half-hour but Dan Lane restored Marshall’s cushion a minute before the break.

Sam Mason notched number four a minute after the restart and Matt Jones completed the scoring on 71.

At the other end, Poole Borough leapfrogged Swanage Town and Herston into second place with a 5-0 triumph at Bridport.

Mariusz Iglewski netted the Hornets’ first after 24 minutes, before Rodrigo Pons doubled the advantage three minutes later.

Pons struck his second on 44 and Danny Gibbons added his name to the scoresheet two minutes after the interval.

Iglewski completed the Bees’ misery as Borough went within four points of leaders Portland United.

Swanage were forced to go third following a shock 3-0 loss at home to Chickerell United.

In the day’s other game, Cranborne went down 3-0 at Westland Sports.
