BOSS Matty Holmes hailed hat-trick hero Jack Lovell as his goals helped Wimborne Town breeze to a 5-0 victory at Shortwood United.

The versatile forward netted his first treble of the season as Magpies increased their chances of securing a play-off spot in Southern League West.

Holmes told the Daily Echo: “Jack scored all three goals with his left foot and it was a wonderful return from him. He has been a really good player for us this season.

“Toby (Holmes) has sometimes overshadowed some of the boys’ performances but I was really pleased Jack got the headlines with his three goals.”

Lovell set the ball rolling for the Cuthbury club on 24 minutes after he gathered Luke Burbidge’s pass and fired into the top corner from the edge of the box.

James Stokoe doubled the advantage before half-time when he tapped in at the far post.

Star striker Holmes converted from the penalty spot after Billy Maybury was fouled to add a third three minutes after the break and Lovell capped a scintillating Magpies performance by finding the net twice more.

“With a clean sheet and five goals you could not ask for anything more,” added manager Holmes.

“It was a really professional job from the lads and they look in a focused zone at the moment.

“I think Shortwood helped as they sat in to try to catch us on the counter. We moved the ball really well and had to be patient.”

Wimborne’s 21st league win of the campaign puts them five points behind second-placed Salisbury with three fixtures remaining.

Holmes added: “We are just pleased with the way we are going. The minimum we can finish now is 10th which would be another record position. The boys are looking forward and want to finish as strongly as possible.”

Magpies visit AFC Totton on Saturday (3pm) knowing victory could be a huge step towards securing a top-six finish.
