A LATE winner from Luke Burbidge gave promotion-chasing Wimborne a huge 2-1 victory at Mangotsfield United.

Winger Burbidge popped up in stoppage time to earn Magpies their first victory at Cossham Street and propelled the Cuthbury outfit to third in Southern League West.

Matty Holmes’s side were forced to come from behind after Mangotsfield’s Jordan Williams had fired home a 13th-minute penalty.

But, despite Wimborne frontman Toby Holmes failing to convert from the spot, goals from Billy Maybury and Burbidge earned Wimborne their 20th league win of the campaign.

Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It was a brilliant result. We didn’t have our best day in terms of our football but you can’t always have that.

“I knew before the game Mangotsfield would be a tough one. Their caretaker-manager has played there for a while and has brought in some really good players.

“I would have been happy with a draw but the win was fantastic. I kept being reminded before the game by our supporters that we had never won there!

“We showed great character to come back from a goal down. We did not give in and the boys knew there was a lot at stake.”

Magpies fell a goal behind when Mangotsfield’s Kyle Tooze was judged by referee Matthew Rushton to have been brought down inside the box by Louis Kellaway.

Up stepped Williams, who confidently fired past Wimborne goalkeeper Gerard Benfield to draw first blood.

Wimborne were only behind for seven minutes as Maybury despatched a brilliant free-kick into the net from 20 yards out.

Skipper Maybury was involved again just before the interval as he was bundled over inside the area. But prolific striker Holmes saw his spot-kick saved by home goalkeeper George Dorrington.

Despite squandering an earlier opportunity to claim the advantage, Magpies got their noses in front when it mattered.

In stoppage time, a free-kick from Paddy Hester was met by Matt Oldring. His headed effort was saved but Burbidge was alert to tuck home the rebound and secure Magpies back-to-back league victories.

Describing his emotions after the winner, manager Holmes added: “Because we knew we had ridden our luck a bit, it was more of a reaction where you keep quiet out of respect for them because they deserved something from the game.

“It was one of those days where some of our boys weren’t on their game and Mangotsfield were.

“We have had games this season where we have dominated and lost. It’s funny how it swings round and there will still be a lot of twists and turns.”
