CHRIS Long's double helped fire Hamworthy Rec into the final of the Dorset Premier League Cup thanks to a 4-1 win over Sherborne Town reserves at Magna Road.

Sherborne belied their lowly league position and forced Rec goalkeeper Sam Jones into two smart saves during a tight first half.

The Zebras were rewarded for their endeavours when they opened the scoring through Ollie Hibbard after 48 minutes.

However, the lead was short lived as Callum Charlton levelled just two minutes later before Long put the hosts ahead with a rasping drive on the hour.

Long extended table-topping Rec’s lead after 66 minutes before Dan Manual came off the bench to complete the scoring late on.

Rec will meet the winners of the second semi-final between Westland Sports and Balti Sports which takes place on Saturday.

In the league, Alan Marsh netted twice for Merley Cobham Sports but they had to settle for a 3-3 draw against Sturminster Newton United who played almost 70 minutes with 10 men.

Marsh gave Cobham an early lead before Jamie Danoris levelled and then received a red card after just 22 minutes.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, United forged 3-1 ahead through goals from Ivan Ivanov and Tom Carter.

Marsh reduced the arrears before a Matt Groves penalty restored parity 18 minutes from time.

Perry Mullins had an incident-packed game as Swanage Town & Herston went down 3-1 at Shaftesbury Town reserves.

Mullins halved the deficit after Andy Baker and Lee Gale had given the Rockies a 2-0 lead, only for the Swanage man to then miss a penalty.

And after Baker’s second had made it 3-1, Mullins saw red for a poor challenge in the closing stages.

Charlie Gajic and Nathan Saxby netted in Holt United's 5-2 defeat at Gillingham Town.
