MASTER marksman Toby Holmes again came up trumps for Wimborne Town after netting a dramatic late winner to earn them a 1-0 victory over Kidlington yesterday.

Holmes settled in Magpies’ favour a scrappy Cuthbury encounter when he bagged his 26th goal of the season from a tight angle just two minutes from time.

The triumph against Kidlington, who moved across from the Central Division this season, saw Wimborne extend to six matches their unbeaten league run and eight games in all competitions, including two wins in the Dorset Senior Cup.

Magpies have collected 16 points during their purple patch, propelling them to third place ahead of a busy Christmas and new year schedule.

Since the start of November they have beaten Shortwood, Cirencester, Mangotsfield, Slimbridge and Kidlington and drawn with Barnstaple.

And boss Matty Holmes is keen for his players not to overdo the festivities as they bid to keep on track their promotion push.

Starting with the visit of Didcot Town next Saturday, Magpies have five games in the space of 17 days, including four against teams in the top nine.

They head to leaders Taunton on Tuesday week before travelling to bottom-placed Bishops Cleeve on December 23.

Magpies host Winchester City at Cuthbury on Boxing Day before another derby follows at Salisbury on New Year's Day.

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “The festive period in non-league is very difficult.

“We will speak to the players about how they have to kick on now.

“If they keep playing the way they are, they are going to win more games than they lose.

“There are parties at this time of year and you just hope they manage themselves, which I am sure they will.”
