MANAGER Ollie Cherrett believes Christchurch’s 3-2 win over Fareham Town in the FA Vase could inspire his players to “achieve something special this season".

Two goals from Luke Stone and Jon Blake’s 90th minute strike booked Priory’s place in the third round for the first time in six years and secured the club £900 in prize money.

Having watched his side struggle during the opening 45 minutes and go into the interval 2-1 down, Cherrett said: “It was a fantastic result for us.

“We started the first half poorly and got dragged into playing a lot of long balls which didn’t suit us at all.

“We spoke about it at half-time and came out in the second half a completely different side.

“We controlled the rest of the game from start to finish and I think we deserved to get the winner in the end.”

The last time Christchurch reached the third round of the Vase was during the 2011-12 campaign, where they lost 3-0 to Bristol-based side Bitton.

Although he remains level-headed, boss Cherrett feels the competition is a great opportunity for his players to show how good they really are.

He added: "We’ve shown we can beat sides in the league above so the players have got absolutely nothing to lose.

“If they show the right attitude and application then there’s no reason why they can’t achieve something special this season.”
