FORMER Cherries striker Matt Tubbs netted twice for Weymouth as Wimborne Town crashed out of the Southern League Cup.

Tubbs signed for the Terras on a month’s loan from Havant & Waterlooville just hours before the first-round tie at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

And Matty Holmes’s men had no answer to their Southern Premier opposition, suffering a 3-0 defeat.

Weymouth opened the scoring when a Josh Wakefield cross from the left perfectly picked out the unmarked Tubbs, who nodded home from 12 yards.

The visitors almost equalised immediately when Sam Bayston blazed over after the Terras failed to deal with a Luke Burbidge cross.

With Magpies growing in confidence, Toby Holmes was the next to try his luck, but an ambitious backheel was blocked at point-blank range by Weymouth goalkeeper Jordan Seabright.

Luke Holmes then stung Seabright’s palms with a 20-yard drive as Wimborne looked to rally.

But Weymouth got their second goal on 61 minutes with a slick passing move. Wakefield found Harry Baker in acres of space and the striker turned and hammered a shot past Wimborne stopper Gerard Benfield.

Tubbs then got his second of the night 19 minutes from time to wrap up the tie and condemn Magpies to defeat.

Meanwhile, Sam House and Jake Long both scored twice to help Lymington Town beat Amesbury Town 5-0 at home in the Sydenhams League Cup.

Owen Fee also found the net as the hosts progressed to the third round and set up an away tie with Andover New Street.

A Will Tickle hat-trick along with goals for Matt Burt, Matt Sheedy and Taylor Leonard meant Brockenhurst thrashed Hamworthy Recreation 6-0 in the first round of the Bournemouth Senior Cup.

In Wessex One, an early strike from Matt Steer proved only a consolation as Ringwood Town lost 2-1 at Fawley.
