LYMINGTON Town’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of fellow Wessex Premier high-fliers Andover Town at the Sports Ground last night.

The visitors were well worth their interval lead, given to them by former AFC Totton man Mike Gosney’s thunderous free-kick after 20 minutes.

But it was a different story in the second half when Sam House’s 63rd-minute penalty rewarded Lymington for their improved showing.

House was brought down when clean through on goal with referee Jonathan Pike opting against handing out any punishment to the Andover defender apart from the spot kick.

Despite their fight back, inspired Lymington goalkeeper Ross Casey was beaten by Gosney for a second time after 75 minutes, with another venomous strike earning Andover an eighth straight league win.

  • Sami Makhloufi took his seasonal goal tally into double figures as Poppies registered a convincing 4-2 win over Sydenhams Wessex Premier rivals Shaftesbury.

Makhloufi’s first-half brace made it six goals in four starts for the in-form marksman.

Second-half efforts from Jamie Wilson and Aziz Aldahan put the finishing touches to Poppies’ first league win at Victoria Park since the opening day of the season.

  • Matt Sheedy netted twice as Brockenhurst moved into the top six in Wessex Premier thanks to a 2-1 win over Portland United at the Meadens Skoda Arena.

Ross Doidge was on target for Portland.

  •  Verwood Town put their miserable league form behind them to record a superb 1-0 win over Wessex One leaders Laverstock & Ford in the second round of the Sydenhams League Cup.

Matt Vining netted the only goal at Potterne Park to set up a home tie with Wessex Premier high-fliers Hamworthy United in the third round.
