JUBILANT boss Matty Holmes felt Wimborne Town’s 3-1 victory at Shortwood United on Tuesday had been their “performance of the season”.

Prolific striker Toby Holmes bagged a second-half double – his second from the penalty spot – after defender Sam Davidson had opened the scoring in the 25th minute.

Injury-hit Magpies were forced to name coaches Danny Holmes and Shane Traynor on the bench and arrived late after getting stuck in traffic en route to Stroud.

Manager Matty Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It was a great night and, all things considered, it was our performance of the season.

“We were excellent when we won 6-1 at Totton earlier this season but we had a full squad that night.

“We only had 10 minutes to warm up after getting there late and it was a tricky pitch. But the boys showed tremendous attitude and a will to play their football. I was absolutely delighted and it was a wonderful victory.

“We were down to the bare bones and lost Dan Cann to flu on the morning of the match so young Will Prior came into the starting line-up.

“We were up against it with Danny and Shane on the bench but we really showed a lot of team spirit to get the win.

“The first 15 minutes were fairly even and the teams sussed each other out but, after that, we were excellent. We played some great football and scored some wonderful goals."

Although Will Morford netted to cancel out Davidson’s opener, Toby Holmes took his league tally to 28 for the season as Magpies climbed to 10th.

Magpies: Benfield, Walker, Penny, Maybury, S Davidson, Kellaway, Stokoe, Preston, T Holmes, Prior, Lovell. Subs: Okumu, L Holmes, D Holmes, Traynor, Walker-Harris (g/k).
