MANAGER Matty Holmes insisted Wimborne Town could have recorded an even greater margin of victory after watching his troops see off strugglers Wantage 4-1 at Cuthbury.

Magpies stormed into a three-goal lead inside half an hour and although the Alfredians pulled one back before the break, the hosts made the game safe late in the second period.

Matty Holmes told the Daily Echo: "I was delighted. We started at a really high tempo and scored the three goals.

"They have conceded a lot of goals so it was really important to get in behind their defence quickly and with quality, and that's what we did.

"We took our foot off the pedal for the last 15 minutes of the half but we had a few words with the boys at half-time to make sure they stayed focused.

"Wantage could have had a second before half-time so we just gave the boys a bit of a sharp reminder not to get sloppy, to be professional and manage the game.

"It could have been six, seven or eight in the end. But Wantage showed spirit and kept going and you have to show them respect and make sure you keep doing the right things."

Louis Kellaway got the ball rolling with a quarter of an hour gone when he tapped home following unselfish play by frontman Toby Holmes.

The advantage was soon doubled, Carl Preston's inch-perfect lob floating over goalkeeper Eddie Cavanagh and into the net.

And when Preston was brought down by Cam McNeil on the edge of the box, Stef Penny's glorious free-kick put Magpies firmly in control.

That dominance was checked when Sam Mason's angled effort found its way past Gerard Benfield, before Wimborne escaped conceding a second thanks to visiting skipper Mark Francis fluffing his lines.

That was how it stayed until the final minute of the contest, when Sam Davidson's pass found Toby Holmes and he had plenty of time to poke home number four.

Wimborne have now surpassed their 44-point total from last season, moving on to 47 with nine games remaining of the Southern South & West campaign.

Matty Holmes added: "We set them the points target and the boys have gone past what last year's Wimborne team got.

"They have got to be proud of that achievement but I don't want them to stop. It's really important we kick on and keep going."
