BOSS Matty Holmes watched Wimborne Town round off a testing spell with victory over Bridgwater before admitting: "I couldn't have asked for a better week."

Magpies shared a draw with Southern South & West leaders Hereford nine days ago before losing narrowly to promotion hopefuls Taunton.

Despite coming up against a determined Bridgwater outfit on Saturday, Matty Holmes saw his side score two unanswered second-half goals to sink the basement-dwellers.

He told the Daily Echo: "It wasn't a vintage performance. At times our passing wasn't great but I was absolutely delighted with the result and was really pleased with the players.

"It's been a tough week with Hereford and Taunton away, two high-intensity games where the boys really had to dig in.

"We were expected to win against Bridgwater but we were on our knees. There was the travelling to the games and the boys have been working all week, and it's a lot for them.

"Dan Cann pulled out on Friday with a groin strain and Billy Maybury was suspended and they are two huge players for us.

"I think Hereford and Taunton will be the ones who go up and I was delighted to get four points combined against those sides and Bridgwater.

"I couldn't have asked for a better week."

Reflecting on the decision to ask the players to train 48 hours after the loss to Taunton, the boss said: "We could easily have given them Thursday off but we trained because we knew how important the Bridgwater game would be if we wanted to finish as high as possible.

"The boys did an hour and a half's work when possibly we should have given them a bit of time off. But we kept going.

"They love training. It's not just about turning up and getting fit, it's about lots of ball work and they are good as gold."

Wimborne were given an early warning by Bridgwater when the visitors hit the post in the opening minutes at Cuthbury.

However, six minutes into the second half and moments after a formation change, Jamie Davidson handed the hosts the lead with a firmly-struck effort from the edge of the box.

Top scorer Toby Holmes made the game safe when, following Carl Preston's pass into feet, he turned the defender and lashed across goalkeeper Liam Kingston.

Matty Holmes continued: "We couldn't break them down in the first half but we told the players to keep their patience and to keep moving the ball.

"We went to a three in midfield and three up top and a minute later, Jamie was away. Toby's goal killed it and it was a wonderful finish."

Meanwhile, a fans' forum is due to take place at Cuthbury tonight with Holmes among those set to be in attendance (7.30pm).
