FORMER Poole Borough hitman Conor Jevon bagged a hat-trick as Weymouth registered a 4-0 win over Wimborne in the first round of the Southern League Challenge Cup on Tuesday.

The Terras and the Magpies both named much-changed teams with ex-Weymouth coach Shane Traynor among the Wimborne substitutes at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Weymouth opened the scoring in the 19th minute when former Poole Town midfielder Billy Lowes was on hand to fire past Gerard Benfield at the far post.

Sam Lanahan wasted a good chance to level for Wimborne before Weymouth doubled their advantage seven minutes before the break when Jevon sprung the offside trap and rounded Benfield to make it 2-0.

Jack Lovell went close to halving the deficit, although two goals in the final four minutes from Jevon ended Wimborne’s hopes of progressing.

  • Poppies continued to hold the Indian sign over Brockenhurst after beating them for the second time in 10 days at Victoria Park on Tuesday.

Dave Ewen’s double earned improving Poppies only their second Sydenhams Wessex Premier win of the season and extended to six games Brock’s winless run in all competitions.

Poppies, who took just two points from their first seven league games, have now collected seven from their past three.

The Winton-based outfit, beaten just once in their past seven games in all competitions, also eliminated the Badgers in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase at the end of last month.

Ryan Long squandered a glorious chance to open the scoring for the visitors when he lost his footing with just Nick Thomas to beat in the first half.

Ewen made the breakthrough 10 minutes into the second half when he finished emphatically from the penalty spot following an apparent handball.

But Brock, beaten in the corresponding fixture and in the FA Vase by Poppies last season, drew level thanks to Mark Barker’s finely-taken effort.

The gifted winger took his personal tally for the season to 18 when he rifled an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner after 62 minutes.

However, Ewen restored Poppies’ lead in the 69th minute when he outjumped Callum Maher and glanced a header past the Brock goalkeeper to seal victory.

  • Bashley’s six-match unbeaten run in Sydenhams Wessex Premier unexpectedly bit the dust after they suffered a surprise 4-2 defeat at the hands of struggling Whitchurch.

The Jam Boys arrived at Bashley Road with just one league win under their belts but Jack McCarthy’s 20th-minute penalty gave them the lead.

Scott Hassell’s stunning 30-yarder just after the break doubled their lead before McCarthy netted from close range to leave Bashley facing a first home defeat of the season.

And a fourth from substitute Ali Ward effectively killed off Bash, although late goals from Curtis Young – his first for the club – and Kabba Jack gave the scoreline an element of respectability.

Callum Davies and Carlo Tate were also on target for the visitors, while Steve Smith notched Hammers’ consolation.
