MATTY Holmes presided over Wimborne Town’s biggest win in the Southern League – and then admitted he would struggle to find time to savour the moment.

Rampant Magpies put to the sword Division One South & West rivals AFC Totton by dishing out a 6-1 hammering at Testwood Stadium on Tuesday.

Master marksman Toby Holmes led the way by plundering a 20-minute hat-trick as Wimborne recorded their most emphatic league victory since winning promotion in 2010.

Stefan Penny started the rout after seizing on a catastrophic error by former Magpies defender Patrick Wilson in the 33rd minute, only for Dan Munday to level for the Stags on the stroke of half-time.

However, Wimborne’s stylish play and progressive approach paid handsome dividends after the break with a Curtis Angell own goal and a Jack Lovell effort sandwiching Toby Holmes’s finely-taken treble.

Wimborne’s fifth league win of the campaign saw them move to sixth place in the table and helped erase the memory of a disappointing 2-1 defeat by Mangotsfield three days previously.

Boss Matty Holmes, who took the reins at the start of the season, told the Daily Echo: “I was absolutely delighted and thought the performance had everything.

“I asked for work-rate and passion after Saturday’s disappointment and although Mangotsfield were a good side, I just felt five or six of our boys were quite flat.

“We could have no excuses because we’d had a layoff so they should have been fresh. We said we needed a reaction against Totton and did we get one!

“Our quality on the ball was good, especially in the second half when the game started to open up and they had to start chasing it.

“If players work hard, show desire and attitude and give 100 per cent, I can take it on the chin if we don’t win. But, nine times out of 10, if you tick those boxes, you will play well and get positive results.”

Wimborne, who visit winless Bridgwater Town on Saturday, renew rivalries with Totton in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy at Cuthbury on October 8.

Manager Holmes added: “The hardest thing I have found with the job is that you can’t really enjoy wins so that is something I have to learn with the experience of being a manager.

“The coaches and players can really enjoy it but I am already thinking about Bridgwater. Someone has given me some really good information on them so I am looking ahead.

“Maybe I need to learn to chill out a little. But you always want to prepare the boys correctly and do the best you can.”

Former Parley sharpshooter Toby Holmes let his feet do the talking by taking his tally for the season into double figures – before snubbing a post-match interview request from the Daily Echo.

Magpies: O’Flaherty, Walker, Hester, Arnold, S Davidson, Kellaway (Stokoe, 75), Maybury, L Holmes (Cooper, 80), T Holmes, Lovell, Penny (Hartley, 70).
