TOM Killick says Poole Town go into their National League clash with Welling determined to right the wrongs of the “inept” FA Cup performance at Chippenham.

The Dolphins were beaten 4-1 by the Southern League high-fliers, leaving Killick to reflect on an afternoon when his players did not deliver.

But the manager insists his tight-knit squad will utilise to good effect the harsh lessons absorbed during their cup demise.

Killick told the Daily Echo: “We can’t guarantee we’re going to win games. But last Saturday, in terms of the effort levels, determination and commitment, it just wasn’t there. And I think the players are determined that won’t be repeated.

“It’s a harsh realisation that if you allow your levels to drop slightly bad things happen to you, in terms of results. It’s a bit of a wake-up call to make sure you are properly focused and you approach games in the right manner. I think that is the lesson to be learned.

“You should be able to guarantee absolute focus and complete determination and I don’t think we had that against Chippenham.”

Tomorrow's fixture is a meeting of two sides that were separated by a two-division gulf last season.

But while Poole have quickly found their feet at National South level following promotion, relegated Welling have taken a while to adapt to their new surroundings.

Nonetheless, the Kent club travel to Tatnam off the back of successive victories, while the Dolphins are winless in their past four league outings.

“What we have really enjoyed this year is pitting our wits against established sides,” said Killick.

“That is the reward for winning promotion. But we’re in this league on merit and we can’t just keep harping on about how well we’ve done to get here and how nice it is to be playing against these sides.

“If you allow those thoughts to creep in, that can be negative. We’re in the league and we want to be successful.

“It’s happened a couple of times that we’ve played teams who are bang in form. But we’re at home and we’re in determined mood so I’m quietly confident we can do well.”

The importance of Killick’s side relocating the winning feeling is intensified by the fact the match is followed by a fortnight’s break from action – owing to both Poole’s FA Cup exit and an absence of midweek fixtures from their calendar until well into the new year.

As such, Killick, who hopes to have Marvin Brooks and Carl Pettefer back for the trip to Hampton & Richmond on October 8, will change his team for Welling’s visit.

He said: “It would probably be unusual to have a performance as inept as the one we had at Chippenham and not have some changes in personnel.

“We’re not going to be able to change in a major way because we don’t have a big enough squad. But there will be one or two changes.”
