POOLE Town boss Tom Killick believes Will Spetch could prove himself to be the best central defender in National South.

Spetch turned in another commanding performance as Dolphins recorded back-to-back victories courtesy of a 1-0 win over Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who also starred at the back during the midweek triumph over Maidenhead, stood firm alongside skipper Jamie Whisken as Poole came under fierce attack as they defended their lead.

Richard Gillespie, Poole’s goal hero against Maidenhead, again came up trumps and netted the only goal after 12 minutes.

Spetch had scouts from Football League clubs watching him before he endured a difficult spell following a move to step two with Sutton United in March 2014.

Killick told the Daily Echo: “There were reasons behind that, mainly injury issues. He is more than capable of playing in this league and beyond.

“I think because of the experience he had at Sutton and the injury, his confidence took a bit of a knock. Probably now for the first time, we are seeing him back in the form that got him the move in the first place.

“I am so pleased for him because he is such a lovely lad and really integral to what we do. He has worked hard and is showing what he is capable of.

“He has a young family and wants to enjoy his football. He is still ambitious to play as high as he can and I am not going to rule out league football for him. But I would imagine he probably thinks that is unlikely and is just concentring on being a non-league player and being as good as he can be.

“When he is in this sort of form, I don’t think there will be any better in the league.”

Gillespie was well placed to divert the ball past Bishop’s Stortford goalkeeper Joe Wright after Abdulai Baggie had been given time and space to try his luck from distance.

The striker registered his second goal of the campaign with a neat flick to secure a victory which saw Poole climb to seventh place in the table ahead of tomorrow’s trip to leaders Weston-super-Mare.

Killick added: “It wasn’t dissimilar to the game on Tuesday in so far as we went in front and then had to withstand some pressure.

“We were probably less of a threat attacking-wise in the second half than we would have liked and it was one-way traffic.

“But, once again, our defending was exceptional. Will Spetch and Jamie Whisken, in particular, were immense.

“As the game wore on, they sent a 6ft 4ins centre-back up front and pumped long balls into him and put relentless crosses into our box.

“The back four as a whole were excellent but those two in particular really stood out along with Nick Hutchings and kept a clean sheet.

“It wasn’t one of our best performances, certainly in the second half, but it was another exceptional display in terms of defending.”
