CHRISTCHURCH boss Ollie Cherrett hit back at Verwood counterpart Gavin Reeves after completing the signing of striker Joe Wood.

Wood, who plundered 19 goals for the Potters in the Wessex Premier last season, was criticised by Reeves for ignoring his calls and opting to step down a level.

The controversy came just weeks after Reeves had left his coaching post at Hurn Bridge in order to make his own way in management with Cherrett's blessing.

"I was under the impression he had told Gavin he would be training with us," said Cherrett.

"Joe's decision probably didn't help but he knew us and considered what he had to offer in terms of facilities.

"It is a step down but due to work commitments, he couldn't take the other option he had in the Wessex Premier.

"The other consideration would have been that we do not intend to stay in Wessex One.

"Rather than challenging to stay in the league, Joe wanted to play for silverware. I think that was a big part of it."

Elder statesmen Andy Mason and Ross Lloyd were set to sign last night with Cherrett hopeful of landing Mark Claremont.
