HAMWORTHY United boss Carl Poore described as “a major coup” the signing of his ex-Poole Town team-mate Steve Smith.

Striker Smith, who netted 10 times for Western League Premier Division outfit Gillingham Town last season, plundered more than 120 goals across four years in the Wessex while at Tatnam.

And the new Hammers manager, captain of that all-conquering Dolphins side, reckons his new recruit is the perfect fit for United.

“It is a major coup for us,” said Poore. “He has experience of Wessex League football as well as scoring plenty of goals in a different league for Gillingham.

“He will give us that bit of knowhow you need when things get tough, as they tend to do at this level, and just as importantly, he is a great character to have around the place.

“It is great to have him on board.”

Karl Yelland returns to the County Ground having made just six appearances for Bemerton last season, while Matt Kemble and Kane Daysh have agreed terms.

Poore added: “Karl has agreed to come back and Matt will be with us after being among a handful of players who moved off towards the end of last season. Matt and Steve up top could be a really good pairing.”

The Hammers have also signed Ryan Dovell, who mixed his playing duties for Bridport with some coaching towards the end of last season.
