FRUSTRATION prevailed as dominant England lacked the cutting edge to beat Slovakia and allowed Wales to nick top spot in Group B.

The much-changed Three Lions bossed the ball but failed to work Matus Kozacik frequently enough as the Slovaks nicked the 0-0 draw that will probably see them through to the last 16.

England started well with Jamie Vardy’s flicked shot and Daniel Sturridge’s guided effort arriving in the opening 10 minutes.

Wales moved into pole position in the final standings when Aaron Ramsey struck against Russia but England kept probing with Adam Lallana dragging wide under pressure from Liverpool team-mate Martin Skrtel.

Vardy was sent scampering down the left by Jordan Henderson but with just Kozacik to beat, thumped into the keeper’s hands.

Wales doubled their lead through left-back Neil Taylor while Roy Hodgson’s men continued to probe for the rest of the half.

Ryan Bertrand’s cutback set up Lallana for a stinging drive before Henderson’s volley was blocked.

It was more of the same after the interval once England had survived a hairy moment between Chris Smalling and Joe Hart.

Nathaniel Clyne was denied at close quarters by Kozacik, while substitute Dele Alli forced Skrtel into a goalline clearance from an acute angle.

Gareth Bale wrapped up a 3-0 triumph for Wales while England kept attacking and one of Sturridge’s last acts was to fluff his lines from a beautifully dinked Eric Dier ball.

Try as they might, England failed to trouble Kozacik in the final 10 minutes and despite qualifying in second spot, ended the group stages with a damp squib.

Instead of facing one of the best-performing third-placed teams, England will now play the runners-up from Group F, which could still be any one of four teams – Hungary, Portugal, Iceland or Austria.
