MARVIN Brooks eventually got a deserved hat-trick as he fired Poole Town to Southern League title glory with a 3-0 win over Dunstable.

The win ensured Dolphins are champions with two matches to spare thanks to a composed and controlled performance at Tatnam, a match which the visitors finished with nine men.

Tom Killick: It took courage for the players to try again after Corby heartbreak

Brooks settled the nerves by latching on to Dunstable keeper Bartosz Pedrycz’s spill after three minutes and then swept home from Luke Burbidge’s cutback just before the hour.

The midfielder, affectionately known as Poodle to his team-mates, was initially denied his treble when David Keenleyside handled his goal-bound header on the line.

Keenleyside was dismissed but regular penalty taker Steve Devlin saw his effort from 12 yards spectacularly saved by Pedrycz.

But Brooks was not to be denied and having slipped through Richard Gillespie to be felled by Pedrycz, who was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, took the second spot-kick to complete his first senior hat-trick.

The success confirmed Poole’s elevation to the National South, non-league football's second tier after a 25-year absence from that level. It was the fourth promotion during boss Tom Killick's 12-year tenure.

Killick named one change from the 1-0 midweek win Stratford with injury-plagued striker Gillespie replacing Tony Lee up front.

Dunstable’s Mark Smith made his presence felt within the first minute by clattering into Burbidge and was lucky to escape without a caution.

Poole soon had something to cheer when play was spread out to Luke Roberts on the left with his cross-shot parried into the path of Brooks, who finished into an empty net after three minutes.

At the other end, an unfortunate ricochet from captain Jamie Whisken’s clearance saw Dunstable pinch possession on the right but Chris Vardy could not muster enough power at the far post to unduly concern Nick Hutchings.

Devlin skied a long-distance effort after 12 minutes and Gillespie scuffed an effort at Pedrycz moments later as the hosts retained control of proceedings.

Pedrycz continued to look shaky as a high Devlin free kick flew over him but Keenleyside was on hand to thump clear from Whisken’s knockdown.

There was a controversial moment when Devlin’s raking pass played in Gillespie who was clearly pushed over by David Longe-King when clean through but man-in-the-middle Martin Underhay emphatically waved away any appeals.

Roberts and Brooks, who waltzed past Zack Reynolds, then combined to tee up Gillespie with a sitter on the edge of the six-yard box but the hitman leant back and inexplicably scooped his shot over the bar.

Vardy volleyed a warning shot on 28 minutes that deflected off Lewis Tallack into the hands of Hutchings but Poole were soon back on the attack.

Brooks expertly turned Smith and burst forward to find Roberts but he failed to connect and the shot was easily gathered by Pedrycz.

The match gradually lost its tempo but Devlin threatened to light the blue touch paper with a crafty lob that Pedrycz was at full stretch to pluck out of the air as the half drew to a close.

And with the last kick before the interval, Whisken was denied by Steve Wales on the goal line after Pedrycz had made a hash of Devlin’s corner.

The second half began in very tame fashion but Poole seized the initiative when Brooks doubled the advantage on 58 minutes.

Gillespie did well to hold up the ball and despite being forced into the right channel, found Burbidge to fire in low for the midfielder to sweep home his 14th of a prolific campaign and his sixth goal in as many matches.

By then, Poole were threatening to run riot and Brooks was denied a certain third by Keenleyside's indiscretion.

Poole's players seemed set to hand spot-kick duties to Brooks until Killick intervened and Devlin’s 68th-minute penalty was brilliantly pushed round the left upright by Pedrycz.

Lewis Lindsay fluffed his lines from the corner that followed before Roberts and Burbidge combined with the move of the match, only for Pedrycz to bravely gather at the feet of Gillespie.

But Brooks was not to be denied and when slipped in Gillespie to be tripped by Pedrycz's trailing leg, the keeper followed Keenleyside in for an early bath.

This time, Brooks was handed the ball and made no mistake from 12 yards with an unerring finish high into the top right corner past outfield replacement Smith.

From there, it was damage limitation for Dunstable with substitutes Lee and Jack Dickson among those to go close late on before the Poole celebrations kicked in.
