STAND-IN boss Paul Roast felt Wimborne’s impressive win at Yate had “stuck two fingers up to a few people” following the club’s much-publicised troubles.

Loyal servant Roast and respected coach John Macey last week stepped in to hold the fort after Steve Cuss had resigned as manager following a run of poor results.

Goals from Jamie Davidson, Franklyn Clarke and Carl Preston earned Magpies a deserved victory against the mid-table Bluebells on their own Lodge Road patch.

Roast told the Daily Echo: “The lads were superb from start to finish. Their work ethic and commitment were second to none and they were different class.

“It’s easy for people to criticise when things aren’t going well but players also deserve praise and credit when things are. They were resilient and hard working.

“We found out a bit about Yate and had a game plan to counter act them. The lads carried it off to a tee and worked their socks off.

“They have taken a bit of a hammering recently on forums and in the press so it was great to stick two fingers up to a few people.”

A host of names have been linked with the vacant manager’s job, although Roast insists he will not be throwing his hat into the ring.

“I’ve got no interest whatsoever,” added Roast, who also named himself on the bench. “I am more than happy to help out for a few games and that is what I’ve told the board.

“It just isn’t for me long term because I can’t commit to it. Even in the past few days I have been blown away with how much of your time it takes up. You are always on the phone speaking to people or texting and it would be too much for me to take on.”

Davidson started the ball rolling with a sublime lobbed effort from near the halfway line before Clarke doubled Wimborne’s lead after latching on to a superb pass from Luke Holmes. And after the hosts had halved the deficit, Preston completed the scoring 14 minutes from time.

Roast confirmed Sam Griffin had left the club for Bemerton and said he expected Holmes to join Southern League Dorchester. However, despite rumours linking Preston with Winchester City, the frontman looks set to stay at Cuthbury.

Magpies: Randall, Crutcher, Holmes (Waters, 82), Maybury, Kellaway, Davidson, Oliver, Stokoe, Clarke, Preston (Turner, 90). Unused subs: Johnson, Roast.
