STEVE Cuss declined to field questions regarding his future as manager of Wimborne Town after the Magpies had slumped to a second surprise defeat in four days.

Goals from Sam Towler and Kye Mountford earned Southern League Division One South & West strugglers Bridgwater an unexpected 2-1 win at Cuthbury last night.

The visitors, who survived a late flurry of pressure after Carl Preston had reduced the arrears 15 minutes from time, had arrived in Dorset having lost seven of their previous nine league games.

Wimborne had been hoping to bounce back after their 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Wessex Premier Blackfield & Langley in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Cuss, who is also a director at Cuthbury, has led Wimborne to comfortable mid-table finishes in the past three seasons but only goal difference is keeping them out of the bottom two having picked up seven points from their first nine games.

Asked by the Daily Echo about his own position, Cuss replied: “There is nothing to say. Are you suggesting something?”

Put to him that people would look at the past two results, Cuss said: “Will they? What, two defeats?”

And put to him that one of those defeats had been to a team from a lower league, Cuss replied: “Interesting. No, I don’t agree with you. I manage the team the best I can and that’s what I do week in, week out and I’ll do it again this week and get ready for Saturday.”

Towler gave Bridgwater the lead in the 20th minute, his opener coming after a header from Jon Blake had struck the upright.

The visitors, who twice hit the woodwork and missed two glorious other chances, doubled their lead through skipper Mountford after 57 minutes before Preston netted from close range to set up a tense finale.

Cuss, asked for his verdict on the game, said: “If we take the game on its own, it was pretty much a draw.

“I thought neither side probably deserved to win but it feels pretty much worse for us because, off the back of what happened on Saturday, we were desperate to try to put it right so for us to come out losing, we were majorly disappointed.

“I didn’t think either keeper made a save during the game. They had a couple of gilt-edged chances that they put over the top but, apart from that, Jason (Harvell) didn’t make a save so it was disappointing to concede two goals. We keep making mistakes and keep being punished for them at the moment which is difficult to take.”
