LUKE Ayrton netted twice as Poppies registered their biggest Sydenhams Wessex Premier victory for almost four years.

Ayrton’s double coupled with goals from Diop Evans, Ami Rosario and Marcel Howard-Ekum saw Ken Vaughan’s men trounce Whitchurch 5-0 at Victoria Park.

Poppies, who beat Brading by the same scoreline in November 2011, avenged two heavy defeats at the hands of Whitchurch last season when they went down 6-2 and 5-2.

Joe Wood’s goal for Verwood Town proved in vain as Horndean maintained the only unbeaten record in the top flight thanks to a 2-1 win courtesy of Dan Woodward and Gary Austin.

Brad Strickland was on target in Lymington Town’s 1-1 draw with Fareham, the Creeksiders replying through Bradey Norton.

Andover Town went some way to settling a score with Hamworthy United after easing to a 6-0 victory at the County Ground.

Knocked out of the FA Cup by the Hammers following a twice staged preliminary round tie, Andover prevailed thanks to doubles from Lewis Benson and Charlie Gunson and singles from Ollie Yates and Suhael Odeh.

Prolific marksman Scott Joyce bagged Brockenhurst’s goal in their 1-0 victory over AFC Portchester in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
