POOLE Town boss Tom Killick described as "a complete accident" the incident that left St Neots winger Remy Gordon with a broken leg.

Gordon suffered a clean break of his right fibula when he and Poole substitute Jamie Davidson competed for a loose ball in the closing stages of Dolphins' 3-2 win at the Cozy Stadium yesterday.

However, Killick stressed that summer signing Davidson, who had only been on the field a matter of minutes, had been blameless.

Killick told the Daily Echo: "It looked an innocuous challenge but led to quite serious consequences for their player.

"Both players went in for the ball and I don't know whether the injury came as a result of the impact or falling awkwardly but suddenly it became evident that he was in a little bit of difficulty.

"There was no booking and no foul given as such, and there was no reaction from their players or management. I don't think anyone thought it was anything other than a complete accident.

"It's never pleasant to see somebody badly injured on a football field, whether it is a player from your team or the opposition.

"We hope that he recovers well and returns to the field as soon as possible."

The injury to Gordon, the son of former Norwich and Cherries star Dale Gordon, soured a significant win for Poole against a team that had ended their promotion hopes in last season's Southern Premier play-off semi-final.

Keith Emmerson put the visitors in front shortly before the break when he beat ex-Southend stopper Danny Gay from range.

Youngster Gordon levelled matters just after the hour mark having been set up by Tom Meechan, only for Dolphins to seize control once more with 15 minutes left.

Striker Luke Roberts was allowed a clear run on goal and he duly converted, with Luke Burbidge then making the most of a defensive mix-up to round Gay and make it 3-1.

With three minutes left, Connor Hall bagged his first goal for the Saints but the hosts' hope quickly turned to concern when Gordon suffered his horror injury.

After play resumed, Poole held on to secure their second league win of the season.

Killick added: "I thought it was an exceptional performance from us because while I know the scoreline made it seem a closely-fought affair, I felt we controlled the game for long periods and probably should have scored more goals than we did.

"It was only when they scored right at the end that things got a bit frantic.

"Often if you go away from home and win a game, you may have had to withstand a lot of pressure having not had the bulk of possession but we controlled the game and had the bulk of possession.

"It was only at the end that we were under any real pressure."
