JACK Swann and Jack Mills scored on their competitive debuts as Verwood Town battled back to win 2-1 at Newport (IOW) in their Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division opener.

New signing Matt Kemble came to the rescue in Hamworthy United's 2-2 draw with Fareham Town.

Jack Satterley put the Hammers in front but Adam Fisher and Simon Woods turned the tables on the hosts before ex-Wimborne striker Kemble intervened.

In Division One, Christchurch manager Adie Arnold bemoaned a pair of controversial penalty decisions after Friday's 0-0 draw with Hythe & Dibden.

Referee Steve Fall waved away Dan Saul's first appeal before pointing to the spot when the same player went down on 29 minutes, only to change his mind after consulting his assistant.

Arnold told the Daily Echo: "You don't want to talk about officials after the first game of the season but you do come back to them. The first one was a stonewall penalty, everyone in the ground could see it.

"I didn't think the second one was a penalty. Maybe the referee was making up for the first one but the assistant got involved.

"To be fair, it didn't change the game. We dominated but weren't cute or clever enough to open them up."

On Saturday, James Shering earned New Milton a 1-1 draw at Laverstock & Ford, while Matt Finlay scored as Ringwood drew 1-1 with US Portsmouth.
