MARVIN Brooks’s late dismissal proved costly as Poole Town conceded in injury-time and extra-time to lose 3-2 at Weymouth in the Dorset Senior Cup semi-final.

The eventful setback saw Dolphins surrender an unbeaten run in the county competition which had dated back to November 2011.

After a slow start, Weymouth defender Jordan Copp dallied in the box and fouled Luke Burbidge with Steve Devlin rattling home an 11th-minute penalty for Poole.

But the hosts gradually grew into the game and levelled when Dean Evans’s shot from distance flew past a deceived Nick Hutchings on 27 minutes.

The match seemed destined to peter out in a second half of few chances until Poole grabbed a controversial goal with 12 minutes left. Burbidge rifled across Jason Matthews with home duo Copp and Evans booked for their overzealous offside appeals.

Poole appeared to be in cruise control but the tide turned when Brooks was given a straight red card for a lunge on Terras full-back Callum Laird with two minutes to play.

Weymouth piled forward and grabbed their lifeline in the third minute of added time when Chris McPhee delicately steered Copp’s drilled centre past Hutchings.

And the hosts made Dolphins pay in extra-time when a break down the right was half cleared for Alec Fiddes to thump home an unstoppable drive from 25 yards, despite a touch from Hutchings.

Meanwhile, Poole are close to completing a loan deal for Cherries youngster Mason Walsh, a winger from the Dean Court club's development squad.

Dolphins: Hutchings, Davis, Spetch (Lindsay, 79), Walker, Whisken, Pettefer (Dickson, 100), Burbidge, Devlin, Roberts, Brooks, Close (Munday, 66). Unused subs: Tallack, Marques de Salve (g/k).

  • Wimborne Town’s hopes of reaching the final ended with a 2-0 defeat at Dorchester Town.

Goals from Ben Watson and Lewis Morgan either side of the interval settled the battle of the Magpies.
