JUBILANT boss Carl Poore oversaw Verwood’s joint biggest Sydenhams Wessex Premier victory and then admitted it could have left him with a tricky selection dilemma.

Verwood, promoted to the top flight in 2012, thumped Newport 5-0 at Potterne Park to match a scoreline achieved against Hayling United in March 2013 and Totton & Eling in November 2013.

And with substitutes Matt McGilchrist and Max Oldham among the goalscorers, and captain Charlie Gajic missing through suspension, Poore acknowledged choosing his next starting line-up could be difficult.

“Apart from goalkeeper Chris Lynch, who is out for six weeks, and Charlie, I had a full squad to select from so a few players were disappointed,” said Poore.

“But the selection paid off and two of the subs came on and scored as well so that is going to make the next one even tougher.”

The Islanders arrived on the mainland on the back of five successive 1-0 victories and had not conceded for 453 minutes. But second-half efforts from Matt Groves, McGilchrist, Oldham and Tom Whelan added to Ben Kelly’s first-half opener as the visitors were blown away.

“It was an absolutely fantastic performance,” said Poore. “It was our best of the season. We defended superbly and threatened to score every time we attacked. It could have been seven or eight.

“Newport are a big club and are pushing for the Southern League. They had won five on the bounce and we expected a tough game. But we battered them and they had no answer.”

Verwood, currently 15th but with games in hand on most of the teams above them, visit second-placed Moneyfields tomorrow.

Since the turn of the year, Poore has presided over six wins in eight games, a run which has seen the Potters move well clear of the relegation zone.

“This win was up there with the best of my career,” said Poore. “As a player, you had games you won but, when you are the manager, you pick the team so the winning feeling is a bit different.”

Potters: Collins, Evans, Buck, Kelly, Donachy, Richardson (McGilchrist, 65), Dyer, Whelan, Fisk, Groves (Golby, 78), Brimson (Oldham, 55). Unused subs: Murray, Rutten.
