CHAIRPERSON Paula Henley unveiled plans for Wimborne Town’s new ground before revealing that the facility would have ‘an awful lot of potential’.

Magpies’ prospective home is set to include a main pitch, training pitch and multi-use games area as part of a plush, modern development next to Leigh Road in Wimborne.

The Southern South & West club hope to move into the ground – which is around two miles from Cuthbury – as early as the 2016-17 season.

The stadium is being constructed at the cost of Wyatt Homes, who plan to build housing on Wimborne’s current premises.

Henley told the Daily Echo: “This ground fits in with everything we’re trying to do. They will be fantastic facilities and there is an awful lot of potential.

“Given that the new ground has to be constructed by Wyatt Homes at their cost, we are in such a good position.

“We’re just sitting still until it’s done so it’s not really inconveniencing us at all. We’re just waiting for our future to be built and soon we will chip off down the road and move in.

“I don’t think something like this happens to many clubs and at Wimborne we don’t get an awful lot, so it’s nice for us.”

Shortly after Henley took over the role of chairperson in September, she set a target of Conference football in three to five years.

And manager Steve Cuss explained that the new ground would provide Wimborne with the ideal platform with which to achieve their ambition.

He said: “I think the big thing is that it will allow us to go to Southern Prem standard and it could be developed so we could go into Conference South.

“We are able to put more seats in and more covered standing in, so everything is geared up for a higher level of football.

“We want to attract the good non-league players and when new grounds come along, players are keen to play at those grounds.

“This stadium will be great to help us attract players because it will be a great place to play football.”
