WIMBORNE Town’s mixed home league form continued last night with a 2-1 defeat to play-off contenders Shortwood United.

The Gloucestershire-based visitors held the upper hand at half-time thanks to Ross Langworthy’s 26th-minute strike but Mark Gamble went close to leveller for the Magpies either side of the interval.

But soon after boss Steve Cuss had made a double change, Wimborne equalised through Jamie Davidson who pounced on a fumbled George Webb cross.

However, the joy was short-lived as James Laurence-Forbes crashed home the decider just seven minutes later.

A disappointed Cuss said: “Once we’d equalised it looked as if we could have gone and won the game but Shortwood caught us on the break and grabbed the winner.

“I was pleased with (debutant) Anthony Waters. He’s an 18-year-old who has come through the under-18s, under-21s and reserves and showed something of what he can do at first-team level.

“Mark (Gamble) wasn’t fully fit when he started the game but gave us his best for an hour.”

Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Oliver, Maybury, Costello, Lupton (Waters, 63), Griffin, Davidson, Webb, Gamble (Kemble, 63), Stokoe. Unused subs: Brimson, Biles, Field (g/k).

  • Ringwood Town ousted double-holders Alresford Town from the Wessex League Cup with a 4-1 victory at Long Lane.

Sammy Cummings and Peter Richmond-Cole each bagged braces to set up a quarter-final tie at Bemerton Heath Harlequins.
