CAUTIOUS Wimborne Town boss Steve Cuss says promotion talk is non-existent at Cuthbury and insists that low-key approach will help avoid a loss of focus.

A 1-0 win at AFC Totton saw Magpies rack up their fifth straight victory in all competitions and climb to sixth in Division One South & West, with only goal difference keeping Cuss’s side out of the play-off spots.

However, the manager was keen to play down the notion of a sustained top-five push, despite recent results.

He told the Daily Echo: “It sounds boring but we haven’t even thought about it. All we think about is working hard and getting the side ready for the next game. At the moment, that’s working for us and wherever that takes us, we will enjoy it.

“I think you just have to try to keep winning games at this stage. It’s still very early in the season and if you start thinking ahead and start saying things you are going to do and achieve, you can lose a little bit of focus.

“For us it’s just about concentrating on the games as they come.

“It’s fantastic for us to get five wins in a row and you have got to enjoy it while you are winning. We are on a roll at the moment and we’ve just got to keep going.”

Wimborne scored the only goal of the Testwood Stadium clash after just eight minutes, when skipper Scott Arnold’s diagonal delivery was nodded back across goal by Sam Griffin and striker Mark Gamble was on hand to steer home.

The visitors were indebted to keeper Jason Harvell, who kept his team ahead with a number of excellent saves, including a superb stop from Craig Feeney’s late header.

Cuss continued: “I thought we dominated the first 20 minutes and thoroughly deserved the lead. If I’m honest, I was a little bit disappointed we didn’t score a second goal during that period.

“From that point on, it was a rearguard action for us. We had to show the other side of our game and defended very well.

“We’ve been hard to play against this year, particularly away from home, and that’s not just down to the back four and the goalkeeper, it’s everyone in the team.”

Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Biles, Maybury, Oliver, Webb (Lupton, 72), Stokoe, Blake, Griffin, Gamble, Kemble (Costello, 87). Unused subs: Brimson, Field (g/k).
