BASHLEY eased into the second round of the Russell-Cotes Cup following a 3-1 win over Hampshire Premier League strugglers Headley United last night.

Clive Makoni struck five minutes before half-time to cancel out United’s surprise opener but boss Graham Speechley-Price felt the contest had been one-way traffic.

Brad Morris, who skippered Bash in the absence of rested captain Chris Hall, fired the hosts ahead 10 minutes into the second half before Leighton Speechley-Price completed the scoring from the penalty spot after Makoni had been brought down.

The manager said: “We went a goal down early on which was disappointing. But once we got control of the game, we could have scored five by half-time. A combination of good goalkeeping and good defending on their part kept us out.

“We dominated possession and had more opportunities in the second half and our goalkeeper was untroubled. We played some good football and it was great to win but I would much rather have three points in the league.”

  • Goalkeeper Stuart Williamson was the hero as Lymington Town saw off Wessex Premier high fliers Newport to book their place in the second round.

Williamson saved two penalties in a shoot-out at the Sports Ground after an eventful tie had finished 1-1, with Ed Stacey bagging a late leveller for Lymington.

Earlier, Stacey had fluffed his lines from the spot after Luke Ansell had been felled before youth team graduate Pete Hurford scored the winning penalty as the hosts prevailed 4-1.

  • Mark Pudney netted twice as Ringwood Town heaped more misery on Wessex Premier strugglers Totton & Eling by winning 2-1 at Millers Park.

Pudney opened the scoring for the Wessex One visitors and sealed victory from a free-kick four minutes from time after 16-year-old substitute Keiran Osman had been tripped.

Ex-Southampton star Jo Tessum played the full 90 minutes for the Millers who head to Ringwood in the Wessex League Cup on Saturday.

  • Mark Smith’s double proved in vain as Christchurch, finalists in 2012 and semi-finalists in the past two seasons, bowed out following a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Wessex Premier rivals Horndean.
