STEVE Devlin wowed the crowd with a 50-yard blockbuster to cap Poole Town’s latest success and then urged the club’s supporters to show more faith in the table toppers.

Three goals in five first-half minutes helped Dolphins demolish to Truro City 3-0 with Devlin’s audacious Beckham-esque drive from the halfway line the pick of the bunch.

Luke Burbidge had already bagged a quick-fire brace, converting at the far post from Devlin’s delicious delivery before firing an unstoppable low blast which cannoned in off the upright.

City’s miserable evening was compounded two minutes before the break when Craig Duff was given a straight red card for kicking out at an opponent.

The second half was something of a procession as the hosts maintained their unbeaten start to the league season and increased to six points their cushion at the Southern League summit.

But despite 10 straight league victories, sections of the Tatnam crowd have criticised performances against some of the Premier Division’s lesser lights with Devlin keen to hear more encouragement from the sidelines.

Poole’s midfield marvel told the Daily Echo: “It doesn’t matter how they come, it’s always nice to score. The team had played so well in the first half and put in a lot of effort.

“We knew we needed a reaction because we hadn’t been at it on Saturday but I thought we put a lot of people’s doubts to one side (against Truro).

“Where we are in the league creates a lot of expectation but it’s the sign of a good side when you win without being at the top of your game.

"People pay to come in and they are entitled to their opinion but until we start losing then maybe it isn’t fair to criticise too much.

“After what happened last season people have high hopes and the lads understand that but we’re just asking the fans to stick with us through good times and bad.”

On his sensational strike, Devlin added: “The ball just fell kindly and I had no one around me. I had looked up a couple of times and the keeper was off his line so I thought ‘why not?’

“To be fair, I thought he was going to catch it but some of the lads said it was still rising when it went over him.

"I didn’t know how far out it was, I had to ask the lads and they said I was just inside their half so it was not a bad strike.

“I’ve hit a few like that during my time in the lower levels. I know I’ve got it in me because I’ve scored straight from kick off before. It was one of those situations where it felt right and it just went in.”
