WIMBORNE Town’s end-of-season woes continued with a 2-1 defeat at struggling Fleet Town yesterday – Magpies’ seventh league match without a victory.

Rob Carr converted Aaron Blaxall’s cross in the eighth minute to edge the hosts in front in a low-key contest but Steve Cuss’s men rallied after the second-half introduction of top scorer Mark Gamble and equalised through Matt Kemble.

However, home captain Ben White had the last laugh and Fleet, who started the afternoon bottom of Southern South & West, almost added gloss to the scoreline late on when substitute Stan Staines hit the upright.

Cuss offered no excuses for his side’s meek display and admitted: “We just weren’t good enough.”

Magpies: Harvell, Brimson, Maybury, Oliver, Donachy, Grose (Gamble, 65), Griffin, Davidson, Stokoe, Kemble, Webb. Unused subs: Roast, Arnold.

  • Elsewhere, relegated Bashley were cast seven points adrift at the foot of the Southern League Premier Division after a 4-0 hammering at home to Frome.

Bash: Jones, Strickland, Flint, Ansell, Rolls, Bulpitt, Roberts, Soetan, Manders (Brookes, 77), Odam, Morris (Joyce, 58). Unused subs: Marden, Gazzard.

  • In the Wessex League Premier Division, Russell Cook rescued a last-ditch point for Hamworthy United in a 2-2 home draw with Newport (IOW).

Ben Osborne opened the scoring for Hammers but the visitors battled back to lead until the dying stages at the County Ground.

“That’s a win and two draws from sides in the top six in recent weeks and that form bodes well for next season,” said manager Graham Kemp.

Luke Ingram’s brace helped fire Bournemouth Poppies to a 4-1 victory at Whitchurch United. Connor Phillips and Jake Rowley also got on the scoresheet.

Poppies travel to Christchurch tomorrow night (7.45pm).

  • Sam Groves, Elliot Head and Kabba Jack were on target for New Milton Town who beat Pewsey Vale 3-2 in Wessex One.

Substitute Anthony Bellott got Ringwood Town’s goal in their 2-1 defeat at home to Petersfield Town.
