Vaughan claims a moral victory as Poppies taste defeat at Portchester
BOSS Ken Vaughan felt Poppies had emerged with their heads held high following a damage limitation exercise against Wessex Premier high-fliers AFC Portchester last night.
Early goals from Nathan Kirby and Jamie Musselwhite earned the hosts a 2-0 win at Wicor Recreation Ground – but Vaughan laid claim to a moral victory for the visitors.
Threadbare Poppies were only able to name one substitute, while a goalkeeper crisis saw midfield playmaker Fawzi Saadi line up between the sticks – wearing a pair of woolly gloves.
Poppies, bidding for a fifth win in seven games, were rocked when first-choice Jamie Bray pulled out due to work commitments with Kenny Vaughan and Sean Lillington both ruled out due to injury.
Vaughan said: “We had five players missing from Saturday’s win against Brockenhurst and none of our three goalkeepers were available so we had to do the best we could.
“I took my hat off to Fawzi because he volunteered to go in goal. I tried to buy a pair of gloves off one of their goalkeepers when we got there but they were having none of it. Fortunately, we found him some for the second half.
“We got caught with our pants down but I was chuffed to bits with the way we played. Everybody worked their socks off and, if we’d had a recognised goalkeeper, I think we would have got a draw.
“We knew it would be a case of damage limitation but we restricted them to three shots on target all night. Even Graham Rix, their manager, congratulated us on our performance.”
Poppies: Saadi, Martinez, Jackson, Owens, Hales, Pearce, Ingram, Turner, Warren, Robinson (Aksakal, 40), Phillips.
- Chris Dillion scored the only goal of the game as Chesham registered a narrow 1-0 win at Bashley in the Premier Division of the Southern League.
Bash: Jones, Gazzard, Flint, Strickland, Marden, Stephenson, Roberts, Satterley, Joyce, Odam, Brookes (Keeler, 59). Unused subs: Farren, Blackmore, Bailey, Morris.
