Non-league: Allen strikes as Bash crash out of cup
MIDFIELDER Dave Allen returned to haunt his former club as Bashley were sent packing by Weymouth in the first round of the Southern League Cup last night.
Bash, forced to switch the tie due to problems with their floodlights, went behind after only nine minutes when Lee Sharpe’s cut-back was turned in by Jamie Symes.
The visitors doubled their advantage three minutes later when ex-Bash favourite Allen flicked on a corner and the ball deflected in off Sam Roberts. Mark Ford further extended the lead after 15 minutes, the winger neatly slotting the ball past Chad Collins, Bashley’s on-loan goalkeeper from Cherries.
And as the Terras threatened to run up a cricket score, Symes struck the post before the underside of the bar came to Bash’s rescue as Ford was denied a fourth.
Collins made a top-drawer double save to keep the score down before Tim Stephenson made an outstanding clearance off the line under pressure from Michael Walker.
A stunning solo goal from Ford five minutes before the interval confirmed Weymouth’s first-half superiority, although Bash were much improved after the break.
George Colson almost pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half, only to see his effort deflected against the post, while Jack Satterley and Jack Odam both went close.
However, Allen completed the scoring with an exquisite curled finish 14 minutes from time.
Bashley: Collins, Morris (Brookes, h-t), Flint (Blackmore, 68), Strickland, Stephenson, Colson, Casey, Roberts, Satterley, Odam, Boultwood. Unused subs: Farren, Gazzard.
- Wessex Premier strugglers Hamworthy United suffered their sixth successive league loss when they were defeated 2-0 at Downton. Declan McGregor netted both goals for the hosts.
